The length of treatment depends on the severity of the problem, the patient's growth and the level of patient co-operation. The estimated time of treatment usually is reasonably close to the actual time necessary, but treatment can be lengthened if growth is different than expected or if patient co-operation is less than ideal.

Co-operation by patients is essential and normally means:

• Wearing all appliances, elastics, headgear, retainers etc as instructed.
• Performing any exercises exactly as prescribed.
• Keeping all appointments as scheduled.
• Maintaining oral hygiene.
• Maintaining excellent oral health.
• Maintaining a good balanced diet.
• Avoiding activities and foods that could damage or dislodge the appliances.
• Informing the office about any problems with the appliances which might occur between visits.
